Total Recall is a 2012 American science fiction action film remake of the 1990 film of the same name, in turn loosely based on the 1966 short story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale" by Philip K. Dick. Unlike the original film, the plot for the 2012 film does not include a trip to Mars, and exhibits more political overtones. The film blends Western and Eastern influences together, due to the fact that the dominant two nation states in the story, United Federation of Britain and The Colony, are battling for political power.
At the end of 21st century, Earth is divided into two superpowers as the results from the devastation of a global chemical war: the United Federation of Britain and The Colony. With habitable space at a minimum, the UFB and the Colony struggle for supremacy. Citizens travel between the two nations via "The Fall", a supermassive gravity elevator which travels through the Earth's core. The UFB also faces terrorist attacks from a resistance movement.
